Bio medical engineering is an application of the engineering principles to bio medical science. It is a field of study which brings medicine and engineering so closer, that the gap between them is shortened. A biomedical engineer mainly focuses on analyzing, designing and developing various biological as well as medical systems such as artificial organs and new medical instruments. It also aims at evaluating the working of the already existing systems. Bio medical engineers work hand in hand with the chemists, life scientists, doctors, nurses, technicians and other therapists to develop and analyze the engineering aspects of the medical systems.
The role and responsibility of each bio medical engineer is different from that of another and it purely depends on the position they hold in the institution. Bio medical engineers basically develop artificial organs such as hearts, hips, pacemakers and kidneys, along with engineered therapies. They develop computer software for the use in medical science such as in the diagnosis of various diseases or for maintaining and managing medical data of the patients. The Bio medical engineers also actively participate in conducting researches and studies to test the existing theories, modify them if necessary and also develop new theories that can adapt to the changing technologies.
Before using new equipment for the diagnosis, treatment or even for observation of the medical condition of the patient, the bio medical engineers check and ensure that this equipment are properly functioning and are safe to use. If any equipment fails to function, it is their responsibility to find out the reason for the failure, and also to give advice on the installation of a new one. They also provide proper training and supervision, and submit reports on the assessment of patients to the doctors, health care professionals and also to the public.
Bio medical engineering is a recently emerged principle and it offers great career opportunities to the bio medical engineers. To work as a biomedical engineer in a reputed industry, company or hospital, one must either do a degree course in engineering with bio medical engineering as the main subject, or a degree course in chemical related with specialization in bio medical engineering. A bio medical engineer must have a deep interest in medicine as well as in engineering and an expertise in science and math. As this is an ongoing research field, one must have the thirst to learn more and improve their knowledge and skill.
